Among those training at the studio was Jack Nicholson, who noticed Field's work and recommended her as “an undiscovered talent” to casting director Dianne Crittenden and director Bob Rafelson. That led to her first major meeting since Gidget and to a role in Stay Hungry opposite Jeff Bridges and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Field says that Stay Hungry marked the start of a career shift; that year she also won an Emmy for Sybil and went on to films like Smokey and the Bandit, Norma Rae and Places in the Heart. Now 79, with two Oscars, two Emmys and a Tony nomination, she stars in Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix and plans rehearsals for a play later this summer, still focused on getting better.
